Linux to the rescue - maybe
Feb 26th, 2005, 12:48pm

Hey all

So I've got this old IBM Thinkpad 760 (PI 166, 40MB, 2.1GB HDD, no USB, no floppy, not CD bootable) that somehow manages to run Win98 fairly stable (as Win boxes go) Unfortunately, I'm not big on the 8 minute boot up (that's only required Win services and virus scanner) So I'm thinking a light weight Linux distro could be just what I need. The catch is that the only working boot methods are HDD and network. I have a router available to my main machine but don't know much about network boots and only slightly more about *nix

The only thing I want this machine to do is run a word processor (preferably OpenOffice - file formats need to be compatible with the Windows boxes) and a web browser. A media player would be nice for a few rare occasions, but I understand that there is no Linux support for the MWave sound card in this machine anyways, so it's a null point.

So any suggestions on how to do this load and what distro to look for (I'm leaning towards release 7ish Red Hat or Mandrake but they may be more bloat than I want on this little machine)
Or am I just wasting my time on this whole idea? I don't really need this machine working, just thought it would be nicer to get it running rather than leaving it to rot in a corner

Thanx
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

Any linux distro you can get to load will work fine.

Suggestions are to NOT run KDE or Gnome.. both are resource intensive.. I have run similiar machines with IceWM and they have run reasonably well.

I assume you don't have a bootable CDROM? if not, then a distro like Mandrake will allow you to make a boot floppy from a Windows machine, and you can put the floppy and CDROM into the laptop to start the install process. Then select IceWM as the default Window manager.  Debian woody would probably be pretty good in those circumstances as well, but it is considerably harder to install then Mandrake.  Mandrake 7.2, if you can find a copy was pretty good for slow machines, but if your running IceWM, I dont' think it really matters what the distro or version is. it is pretty lightweight.
