need help with regards using linux on windows pc
Jun 17th, 2005, 10:58am

Hello,

I have a pc on which I run windows xp. The system is decent 512 mb of ram, a nice size hard drive, and pentium 4 under the hood.

I would like to run a version of Linux with windows. My two options I believe are creating a virtual drive or reparation of my hard drive. I would like to do either one, to allow dual booting of both OS's. As well could I have some installation help?

Could someone explain exactly how to do this, as well as what version of linux to use. The only stipulation is that I would like to keep this free.

Thanks

There's another option that would NOT require any changes to your existing system.  Go check out www.knoppix.org.  This is distribution of Linux that enables you to created a bootable CD so you can run Linux from the CD without modifying your existing system.  It's great for trying out Linux without risking your current system.

There are limitations to this setup though, as you generally cannot save custom settings or configurations, but it's worth a try to get a taste of Linux before committing to it.

It should also be noted that recent Linux distro's like Mandrake/Mandriva will give you the option of resizing the Windows partition to make room for Linux dual boots.

Its all graphical and use friendly and is very self evident during the installation process.

You can find Mandriva linux here:
http://mandrivalinux.com/

and you can download it here:

I've been using Mandrake on the desktop for years and have found it a very good general purpose distro.
