WordPress 2.0.1 was just released, but has a bug in the RSS coding the will prevent the proper handling of the post rss. Comment rss feeds are working. It is easy to fix, although having things like this broken are very frustrating especially for people like me that maintain perhaps 20 or so WordPress installs. I now need to go back to each of them and make the correction.

The official RSS bug track is here. I find that the lack of notices from WordPress leaves me struggling sometimes. A bug of this magnitude should be sent do all people who request notices from WordPress. Also, give the security lapses in the 1.5 release (that allowed someone to actually upload content to your server), not updating to a current version while waiting for bugs to be worked out was not a good option. I hope they do better in the future.

The fix for those who find the bug track hard to follow is just the replacement of one line of code. They show the current line with a minus in front of it and the next line with a plus (minus the plus … no pun intended) is inserted. It is line 1324 in the code of wp-includes/classes.php.

Simple fix, but in my humble opinion significant enough to warrant a release of 4.0.2.

Is there a list somewhere I am missing where people notify you of such significant breaks in the program so you can fix them? If so please tell me about it.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to have a look at Windows Vista soon. I have been contracted to tech-edit a Vista How To Book for a publisher I am fortunate to work for from time to time, with one of my favorite authors. So I am tuning my ear to the ground regarding the Vista roadmap.

Much has been said about Vista, including that you will want it for security of for no other reason. Some, like this article on Slashdot are rumoring that it will not run on many computers because of its aero glass graphics. That is apparently myth accourding to Mr. Microsoft Jr., the Scobelizer who reports that Vista runs fine on his machine that lacks the aero glass rendering ability. In fact just a day or two ago he was glowing about how well it runs on his platform.

I cannot wait to get a copy of the beta in my hands and kick it around a bit.

So I sit here watching the tele and it suggests that I go to joinbode.com. I figure sure, why not, so I visit. It is an odd site. What is the point of it? I find something I can click on (a chairlift) and it tells me I get a star. Woopie, back to piano lessons? I get a star. What is the point of this site? I have no idea. I try his myspace.com site. Server too busy. On to something worthwhile. Bye Bode. I guess I’ll never know what it is about … and I am pretty sure I don’t care. When I get to a site where the purpose is not clear, I clear out.

I was cruising around the net today and come to the page of RussellBeattie. The guy is a nerd — sorry Rudoublesedoublel. He has pictures to prove it. He decides one day to dump comments from his blog to simplify life. We did the same thing here, only it was accidental (we broke our captcha by accident — I’ll fix it one day soon). The sad part however is that …. nobody even told us. There is no love, so Russ, be happy anyone cared.

CoComment is a site that looks very promising. It will allow you to track where you leave comments, put a copy of the comments you leave here and there on your own website for your readers. It brings everything full circle. Sadly it is a popularity contest apparently as you need an invitation code and nobody sent me one. Maybe I can trade a gmail invite (or wait that was then) or a Newsvine tip or two?

Google today hired a significant figure from rival Amazon’s K9 search team. Head of that division at Amazon, Udi Manber, will become an engineer at Google. This is just the latest in a number of high profile hirings over the past few years by Google. Working there must sometimes feel like you are in the internet hall of fame. Hey guys, I am available if the price is right. Please contact me …

I occaisionally say bad things about Microsoft here — when I think they deserve it. Sit down a second, I have something good to say on the subject of Microsoft! I am preparing to work on a book involving Vista, Microsofts new operating system (and more) schedule for release later this year. So I visited the official Vista website today and was super impressed with the layout of the page. It really seems to have depth to it.

One of the features promised for Vista, and a feature I could care less about (or is it could not care less about?) is the glass translucent buttons and menus. However on the website, they sort of mimic them with translucent buttons (very slow to load on and off states by the way on my connection speed) that you see through to the far off mountain vistas. Slick job. Kudos to the MS web designer (or contracted person[s]) who handled that task.
