Today I had to create a 404 page, and I wanted something a bit better than the drab, 1990s-version of the typical 404 page. Enter A List Apart.

This great article at ALA gives tips on creating 404 pages that help improve your site’s usability and create a friendlier user experience for your visitors. Among the tips:

  • Don’t admonish the user
  • Keep it minimal
  • Incorporate javascript to tailor the 404 error based on how the 404 page was reached.

Check it out for specific javascript example and a more in-depth look at the hows and whys of creating a usable and friendly 404.

Franki earlier reported on the re-emergence of pop-under advertisements as a method of circumventing pop-up blockers built into Safari and Firefox browsers. I wanted to dig further to see if they were really back. The answer is clearly yes, as shown in this screen shot. As you can see by the next screen shot, this pop-under with the address http://205.180.85.40/w/pc.cgi?mid=60922&sid=4253 comes from a referring page at http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/motor.htm. This confirms the information at MacFixIt that howstuffworks is using them.

See the Color Change in the top right corner. I really like the simplicity of this.

It is just lines like this:
<span style=”background: #eeeeee; border: 2px solid #006699″>
<a href=”#” onclick=”setActiveStyleSheet(‘default’)” title=”default” style=”text-decoration: none;”>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>
</span>

and then this javascript kicks in to manage the change: http://www.deanesmay.com/styleswitcher.js

I came across this nifty little DHTML Slide In Menu on another site and decided I liked it enough to track it down. It looked a lot better to me on the site where I found it. What I don’t like is how it acts/reacts when you scroll down as it bounces.
